Document / Image Restoration

Several years ago I was asked if I could create an image from a large map that was in very poor shape.  The map was too large to scan with the resources that were available so I had asked that the map be photographed with a series of overlapping photographs that contained the entire map which are seen below.  These photographs were taken with a consumer (point and shoot) camera under less than ideal conditions.

Stitching these 6 photographs we see the following:

The task was to restore the map by repairing the rips and tears, cleaning up the border and removing the tape that was applied below the scale on the lower left side.  There were also a number of stains that occurred over the years that were to be removed.  But of primary concern was not to change the antique look of the document.

With extensive use of the assorted tools in Photoshop, the following image is the finished product.  However, one must understand in a restoration project, all the problems can be fixed given an unlimited amount of time.  A balance must be reached between what needs to be fixed and what should be left alone to preserve the antique look of the document.  The restored document is seen below.
